00 — Overview

Work & Supply network member (added 2026-10-08). The demo codes are a common subset of Caterpillar SMCS supplied for the demonstration; extend or correct them as needed.

What Classification is

Maintenance history only becomes comparable when everyone describes it the same way. A transmission removed from a Cat 793F and one removed from another truck should both be counted as transmission removals; a left-hand final drive should always be the left-hand final drive. Classification holds those shared codes once, so every application records them the same way.

Three separate things are kept apart:

Example Held where
SMCS code — what kind of component 3030 Transmission here
Installed component — the physical, serialised unit fitted at a position TX-793-00412 in TRUCK-17 Asset Register (fitments)
Part — what you buy CAT-793-TRANSMISSION Catalogue

The 3 code lists

  • Smcs — a component code and its description, e.g. 1000 Engine, 1052 Turbocharger, 3030 Transmission, 4050 Final drive. Codes form a hierarchy; the parent is inferred from the code, never typed (see 01).
  • Modifier — which one of several identical components on a plant, e.g. LH Left hand, LF Left front, B1 Engine bank 1, C06 Engine cylinder 6, P2 Pump 2. Each modifier has a dimension (side, corner, front/rear, vertical, radial, unit, circuit, flow, bank, cylinder, pump, motor).
  • JobCode — what was done, e.g. 010 Remove and install, 020 Repair, 520 Overhaul, 522 Recondition before failure, 523 Recondition after failure.

Each code has a scheme (SMCS) and a status (active / inactive). Inactive codes stay for history; the search offers active ones.

The demo codes

  • 52 SMCS codes — engine (1000–1900), transmission and driveline (3000–3282), drive train (4000–4800), implement controls (5000–5458), implements (6000), machine / structure (7000–7950).
  • 49 modifiers — sides and corners, front / rear, upper / lower, inner / outer, units 01–04, main / auxiliary / primary / secondary, input / output, engine banks B1–B2, cylinders C01–C20, pumps P1–P3, motors M1–M2.
  • 16 job codes — remove / install, replace, disassemble / assemble, repair, inspect, adjust, test, clean, overhaul, recondition before / after failure, replace bearing.

How Asset Register uses it

A fitment (Component Installation) records where a component is fitted as a component SMCS code plus one modifier — the left-hand final drive of TRUCK-17 is 4050 + LH, shown as 4050-LH. The position stays; the serialised units fitted there change over time, each with its own fitment. A removal records its job — 522 (planned, before failure) or 523 (after failure) — so planned and unplanned removals can be counted apart.
